Pioneering artist blending technology, performance, & media

Kasumi’s work is about memory and the echo chambers of memory - a perpetual feedback loop of patterns that creates consciousness. She uses the symbols, images, and gestures that encode meaning and form the units from which we tell our stories, and that paradoxically both limit and expand human possibility. Her raw materials are clips of moving images culled from the scraps of mid-20th Century mass media and early 80's Japanese popular culture. These materials are at one and the same time the contents of electronic archives and the unconscious reservoir that feeds our current dreams.

Her lexicon is broad, her apprehension of technology commanding, and the way she pokes the membranes of our minds is unique.
— Carlo Wolff, CAN Journal
The experience of seeing the film leaves one stunned by Kasumi’s skill as an artist in a style too new for one to expect such artistry.
— Peter Friedman, author of 'Ruling Imagination: Law, Art & Creativity'
...an uproarious bricolage of alien-invasion panic, financial distress, military might and patriotic sentiment.
— Steve Smith, The New York Times
Heralded for creating a new genre of cinema, critics call Kasumi “one of the most original and important artists working today.
